GitHub will deprecate six Copilot models on October 19, 2026, and the enterprise work is finding dependent workflows, testing replacements, and documenting the move first.

1 The removal and its date

A GitHub changelog entry dated September 18, 2026 states that six models will be deprecated across all GitHub Copilot experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, agent modes, and code completions, on October 19, 2026. The listed models and alternatives are Gemini 3.7 Flash to Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4 to GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5 mini to GPT-5.6 Luna, and Grok 4.5 to Grok 4.6. The notice says no action is required to remove them after deprecation, which is the easy part. The work is everything that assumed the old model would be there.

2 Finding dependent workflows

Dependencies hide in three places. Explicit model selections live in configuration and scripts. Implicit ones live in habits: a team that tuned prompt chains or review comments around one model's style has a dependency nobody wrote down. Third-party integrations live outside the repository entirely, which is why the changelog asks for integrations to be updated as well as workflows.

3 Testing replacements honestly

The suggested alternatives are one model up in each family, making substitution look trivial and behavior look identical. It is not. Semantic versioning treats a major number change as a breaking interface change; a model generation change is not formally the same thing, but the practical risk rhymes. The dependable test is a fixed set of real tasks run against the new model, compared with saved output from the old one, and a person deciding whether the differences are acceptable.

4 Preserving behavior

Prompts tuned for one model often carry an implicit style contract: a preferred format, a level of hedging, an assumption about context use. When the model beneath them changes, output changes though the prompt did not. Recording the prompt, the model, and a sample of accepted output before the cutover is what makes the later comparison possible.

5 Default enablement is not a choice

The notice explains that under default model enablement, the suggested alternatives are automatically enabled for Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Business customers unless an administrator turned off the global default or explicitly disabled the model. An automatically enabled model is available, not selected, and not tested.

6 Documenting the migration

Two records carry the most weight afterwards: the date each workflow moved, and what the replacement produced on the same inputs. Write them when the change happens, because whoever knows why a prompt was adjusted will not be on the thread six months later.

7 Bottom line

Six models across all Copilot experiences stop being supported on October 19, 2026, and the notice arrived September 18.

Suggested alternatives are enabled by default for business and enterprise customers, which is availability rather than a verified substitute.

The durable work is a saved baseline of prompts and accepted outputs, so the replacement can be compared rather than assumed.
